Holcim Polska tests coal-free clinker production

Holcim Polska and Geocycle have conducted a technological trial at the Małogoszcz cement plant, during which clinker and cement were produced for several days without the use of coal. The process was powered entirely by alternative fuels.

During the test, the plant achieved a Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR) of 100 %, meaning fossil fuels were fully replaced by alternative fuels in the energy balance of the clinker burning process. The company described the milestone as a key step in the implementation of its decarbonization strategy.

According to the company's CEO, the trial demonstrated that coal can be eliminated from the process without compromising production safety or quality. Following the successful test, the company plans to move toward full-scale implementation of the solution.

The expansion of alternative fuel use is part of Holcim’s broader strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions and promote a circular economy under its NextGen Growth 2030 program.
