Qatrana Cement Plant to switch to natural gas

The Al-Qatrana Cement Plant in Jordan is set to switch from heavy fuel oil and diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG) from 2027 as part of efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

The agreement between Watani and Qatrana Cement is expected to reduce combustion-related emissions by 27–30 %. The project is part of Jordan’s broader efforts to diversify energy sources and decarbonize the industrial sector.

Experts called for the transition to natural gas to be complemented by renewable energy, energy-efficiency measures, alternative materials and carbon-reduction technologies.
