Concrete casting in the construction of the Gotthard Base tunnel
In many ways, the construction of the Gotthard Base tunnel was a challenge for all participants. This also applies to the concrete supply system of both southern sections — Bodio and Faido. A large-scale use of crushed mica sand for the first time in history was a step in a completely new, unexplored direction. The high and inconsistent content of phyllosilicates meant that the concrete compositions, designed and tested prior to construction, did not have the necessary reliability. In parallel with the construction large-scale experiments to develop and implement new solutions had to be staged. These developments made it possible to do without building a concrete supply center in Faido concrete, and helped to optimize the schedule of construction and high performance. The use of crushed mica sand to produce high-quality concrete helps to preserve natural resources.Author: A. Schaab |
