Making ready mix concrete production more data-driven and innovatively sustainable

Globally the ready mix concrete production has grown significantly in the last five decades. The annual turnover of the industry is expected to reach about 800 billion US dollars in 2021 and is likely to grow at about 8% up to2028. The production technology offers many advantages, particularly consistent quality and environmental benefits. Although the batch plant operation in a ready mix concrete plant is fully mechanized, the rest of the process depends on human expertise. In the existing plants the process control systems are not real-time. In addition, much of the advances in concrete science and technology are yet to find their way into the ready mix concrete plants. There is a distinctly perceived need for adopting innovative approaches for making the ready mix concrete production more sustainable. The paper attempts to highlight the problems in the current status of the technology and opportunities for making it data-driven and sustainable.
