Transportation and logistics innovation and technology for balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability
Transportation and supply chain management are the backbone of global commerce, yet their rapid growth has amplified emissions, pollution and resource depletion. This paper examines how emerging innovations and technologies can align economic growth with environmental stewardship in transportation and logistics operations. We begin with smart logistics systems, leveraging the Internet of Things for real-time tracking, blockchain for transparent transactions, and predictive analytics for dynamic inventory and route optimization. These tools minimize empty miles, boost load factors, and enhance reliability across complex supply networks. Consuming clean energy plays a key role—fleet conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen, and electric powertrains, as well as powering warehouse and port infrastructure with renewable energy. This article describes the measures taken by Dangote and Niger Dock companies to improve their environmental performance, as well as government incentives for this purpose in African countries. Possible ways to further counteract these negative environmental factors are also outlined. By embracing a holistic approach to transportation and supply chain innovation, stakeholders can drive economic prosperity while safeguarding the planet, forging a resilient, sustainable global logistics ecosystem.
