Ambuja Cements joins Global Decarbonization Alliance, plans ₹100 billion investment in renewable energy

Ambuja Cements Limited, part of the Adani Portfolio, has announced its membership in the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), becoming the first cement manufacturer in the world to join this global platform.

The alliance, which includes companies across various sectors, aims to accelerate the transition to Net Zero in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

The company, operating within the cement industry known for its high emissions, has committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050, with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In line with its sustainability goals, Ambuja Cements has declared an investment of ₹100 billion in renewable energy projects. These projects, which include a 1 GW capacity and 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS), are expected to supply 60 % of the company's expanded capacity with green power by FY2028.

In the past fiscal year, Ambuja Cements utilized over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources and achieved statuses of being 11 times water-positive and 8 times plastic-negative, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The AFID, facilitated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), promotes industry-level dialogue and cooperation to help companies develop effective decarbonization strategies that align with national climate commitments. Through its participation in the alliance, Ambuja Cements aims to not only reduce its environmental impact but also to contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
