Argos, the cement company of the Argos Group, produced more than 20,000 tons of alternative fuel from waste in 2021 for use in its operations in Colombia. The consumption of this material has increased by about 48% compared to 2020, which was achieved due to the joint recycling program.
As part of this program, the company uses waste from other industries and turns it into an alternative fuel for the operation of its cement kilns. The program is aimed at reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the improper disposal of these wastes in landfills.
The plant has suppliers who are responsible for the collection and preparation of waste, such as used tires, which are subsequently delivered to factories in Rioclaro and Cartagena to be used as an alternative fuel in production. The combustion process carried out in cement kilns has special characteristics that ensure the complete destruction of toxic components, as well as the use of their energy; in addition, special equipment installed for this purpose has excellent filtration and gas purification systems that guarantee the safe disposal of waste; unlike what happens when they are burned outdoors.
