Asia Cement Won Green Leadership Award with Deployment of Net-Zero Emission

Asia Cement has won recognition globally with its systematic strategic deployment which actively promotes greenhouse gas reduction and the development of a sustainable green economy. On June 30th, Asia Cement has once again won the “Green Leadership Award” of  the 2023 Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards, making them not only the cement company with the most awards but also standing out for the third time in the “Green Leadership” category.

The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) is considered one of the highest honor in Asia recognizing achievements in field of ESG. The award-winning project submitted by Asia Cement this year is named “Net-Zero Carbon Emissions By 2050 - Asia Cement Advanced  Deployment” Through five major strategies, including the use of alternative materials and fuels, reducing ratio of clinker in production, minimizing indirect emissions from use of electricity, and investing in carbon capture and utilization, Asia Cement has set short- term, mid- term, and long-term goals to achieve net-zero by 2050. It is acknowledged by the judge that cement industry is an energy-intensive industry with unavoidable consumption of fuel, usage of electricity, and greenhouse gas emissions. However, Asia Cement has pro-actively adopted the latest equipment and technologies to achieve remarkable results in emission reduction, making their award well-deserved.

In addition to expressing gratitude for the recognition from the organizing committee, Asia Cement has also released the latest statistics. In 2022 alone, Asia Cement’s green-friendly initiatives has reduced the extraction of natural raw materials and fuels by approximately 339,000 metric tons. This includes limestone, iron sand, clay (266,000 metric tons), coal (17,000 metric tons), and gypsum (56,000 metric tons). By using alternative materials and fuels, Asia Cement has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 95,125 metric tons during the production process alone, which is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of 245 Daan Park in a year.

Asia Cement also mentioned that this year is crucial for integrating the upstream, midstream, and downstream industries and implementation of energy-saving and carbon reduction measures. Asia Cement responded to the “1+N Carbon Management Program” initiated by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan Research Institute, calling on subsidiaries, such as Ya Tung Ready Mix Concrete, Ya Li Precast, and important customers to collaborate in creating carbon inventories and providing energy-saving guidance. This enables them to understand their own emission hotspots and work together to reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, they partnered with domestic research institutions and launch the “High-Efficient Carbon Capture Technology Project,” capturing carbon dioxide from flue gas through industrial waste, and providing negative carbon aggregate materials to manufacturers of downstream product, enabling the production of low-carbon emission products and enhancing market competitiveness. The goal is to capture and reuse 18,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2030.

Moreover, Asia Cement is pro-actively promoting the circular economy and creating new value in cement industry. Their sources of circular economy materials include government agencies, as well as wasted material by industries such as steel, petrochemicals, stone, photovoltaics, paper, textiles, and construction. For example, Asia Cement’s Hualien plant assists the Hualien County government in converting sewage sludge into biomass fuel, disposing of bottom ash from waste incineration, and helping the Environmental Protection Administration dispose of refrigerants. From 2019 to 2022, Asia Cement has used approximately 1.92 million metric tons of various wasted and recycled products as alternative raw materials and fuel, ensuring the continuous recovery and circular regeneration of resources. Asia Cement is committed to implementing low-carbon sustainability, accelerating industry transformation, and delivering on their promise of achieving zero net carbon emissions to co-create a green home.
