Graphene-added concrete was used for the first time in construction

Сoncrete slabs were made from an experimental mix of Concretene for the construction of a new gym in the UK. This is the world's first building experience using concrete containing graphene. The project participants are researchers from the University of Manchester and the construction firm Nationwide Engineering. The new material is reported to be about 30% stronger than conventional concrete.

The produced stable graphene additive can be dosed directly at the batching plant, and builders do not need to change the pouring technology. The gym will become a kind of testing ground — Nationwide Engineering plans to monitor the quality indicators of the innovative material.

According to Nationwide Engineering experts, replacing conventional concrete with Concretene can reduce СО2 emissions associated with its life cycle, which could be reduced by 25%. The prime cost of a concrete mixture containing graphene is 5% higher, however, due to its lower consumption, its cost for the consumer is 10–20% lower.
