Cement maker Lafarge Srbija plans to invest 110 million euro ($120.5 million) in the first phase of opening a cement factory in Belgrade's Obrenovac municipality, Serbia's government said.
The Obrenovac facility will produce cement from the ashes of thermal power plants, the government said in a statement, following a meeting between Serbia's prime minister Milos Vucevic and Lafarge Srbija CEO Dimitrije Knjeginjic.
Serbia's state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije operates two thermal power plants in Obrenovac, with a total installed capacity of over 3 GW.
Lafarge Srbija, part of Swiss building materials manufacturer Holcim Group, already operates a cement factory in Serbia's northwestern city of Beocin and several concrete plants across the country.
In 2022, Lafarge Srbija also took over the management of aggregates producer Teko Mining Serbia, it says on its website.
