The Rhône Décarbonation project, led by Vicat, has signed a strategic partnership to supply biogenic CO₂ for the production of synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF).
The agreement covers 50% of H4 Marseille Fos’s biogenic CO₂ requirements for 2040. Captured CO₂ from industrial facilities in the Rhône corridor will be transported via SPSE infrastructure to industrial users in the Fos-sur-Mer area.
A key part of Rhône Décarbonation is the VAIA project at Vicat’s Montalieu-Vercieu cement plant, which is designed to capture 1.2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually using post-combustion capture technology. The captured CO₂ will be transported through pipeline network.
The projects have received public support from the EU Innovation Fund, CEF Energy and the French government’s GPID programme, alongside private financing. Rhône Décarbonation is moving toward implementation, with capture technology tested under industrial conditions and long-term supply contracts being developed.
