Aluminum compounds as inhibitors of alkali-silica reactions in Portland cement compositions.

The ability of aluminium compounds (amorphous Al(OH)3, aluminium sulphate and basic aluminium sulphate) to inhibit destructive alkali-silica reactions in Portland cement mortars. These compounds, in the same dosage in terms of Al2O3, can be arranged in the following sequence depending on their inhibitory action: Al(OH)1.78(SO4)0.61 ≥ Al2(SO4)3 > Al(OH)3. The main plasticizers used for practical purposes do not affect the ability of the aluminium compounds to inhibit alkali-silica reactions.
