The use of “fast-setting concretes” for airport repairs

In 2005, Czech Skanska in collaboration with MC-Bauchemie started developing rapid-hardening concrete for the fastest possible replacement of the existing concrete pavements with the new ones on roads with heavy traffic of heavy-duty vehicles. Today, the technology of concrete pavement repair and elimination of defects using the developed rapid-hardening concrete has become a tested and proven solution with regard to the roads.
The article describes the experience of using this concrete for the repair of a concrete pad in the Prague Ruzyně airport, where a number of specific requirements were to be met and special care taken during all operations. The repair was successfully completed 3 hours before the deadline, in spite of the adverse weather conditions. The subsequent assessment of the repair in the light of experience confirmed that the developed concrete mixture and the repair operations were chosen correctly, because no defects were found in the renovated facility.
As of today, it is the only case of major repair to an apron at the airport in the Czech Republic with the use of quick-setting concrete.
