Argos to triple its export capacity from Cartagena

With an investment of close to US$42 million in the construction of a new terminal in the free trade zone of Cartagena, Colombia, Argos is expanding its port infrastructure and the movement of cement, clinker and other raw materials to 3.5 million tons per year, which will triple its capacity to receive and export products compared to its current operation.

The new terminal, which complements Argos’ existing port facility, from which it exports cement and clinker to the United States and other destinations in the Caribbean and Central America, will begin operations in the first quarter of 2022.

Juan Esteban Calle, Argos CEO: «We are extremely proud to materialize this ambitious project to expand our export capacity from Colombia and to continue purposefully investing in the country in order to contribute to economic reactivation, the generation of quality jobs and the creation of social value in the territories where Argos is present. This new terminal will allow us to substantially increase cement exports to the United States, taking advantage of the growing demand for construction materials in that country. »

During the terminal’s construction, Argos generated around 1,200 direct and indirect jobs and supplied more than 10,000 m3 of concrete and around 170 tons of cement.

The port infrastructure has high-tech hermetic conveyor belts that will move the export materials directly from the storage silos to the ship, which will reduce the number of trucks carrying cargo and, therefore, reduce atmospheric emissions.

Carlos Horacio Yusty, Argos Vice-President of the Colombian Region: «This expansion will allow us to increase the efficiency and versatility of our industrial activities and strengthen our connection with customers in other territories where we operate. In addition, with the increase in exports, we will boost the generation of foreign exchange from our Cartagena Plant. Undoubtedly, this reflects our purpose of making possible the housing and infrastructure construction dreams of our allies to promote sustainable, prosperous and inclusive communities. »
