Jamaica’s Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator Aubyn Hill, said the construction sector is reporting fewer complaints about cement shortages as market conditions stabilize.
According to the minister, the Cabinet has allowed additional importers to bring in cement in order to ensure adequate supplies and competition in the market.
Hill said three or four more importers had received approval to supply various quantities of cement. He noted that the balance between supply and demand is returning to normal: Caribbean Cement Company has increased imports, while new importers are putting their supply arrangements in place.
The earlier disruptions were linked to operational problems at Caribbean Cement Company Limited following heavy rains. In April, Buying House Company Limited received approval to import additional quantities of cement to meet urgent market needs.
