Cement Transportation by Railways Continues Growth in Russia

Russian Railways increased cement shipments in the period of January-November to 24.8 million tons, or 4.5% compared to last year. According to the reports of the Russian state-owned corporation, the cement industry is one of the few to show growth amid a general decrease in freight turnover on the Russian Railways network.

Freight turnover in November 2019 decreased by 3.3% compared to last November and amounted to 213.2 billion tariff ton-km. Counting in the mileage of empty cars, the turnover also decreased by 3.4%, amounting to 271.6 billion ton-km. Shippings fell by 1.7% to 105.5 million tons throughout the Russian Railways network where 1.6 million tons accounted for cement.

Cement shipment on average has steadily increased throughout the country this year. In October, Russian Railways reported an increase in cement shipment by 5.5%, to 20.8 million tons.

At the end of October, in Belgorod, Russian Railways opened a specialized cement packaging and shipment complex, capable of receiving up to 10,000 tons of such cargo monthly. According to Soyuzcement (the Russian association of manufacturers), railways accounted for 44.7% of all cement transported this year.

‘The Center of Corporate Transport Services’ of Russian Railways note that the increase in cement transportation via the railroad network is associated with the implementation of the national project of ‘Housing and Urban Environment’ and its subprojects. The Russian government claims the implementation period of the national project to be until 2024.
