Dangote Championing Use Of Tyre, Shells As Alternate Fuel

In its attempt to secure environmental sustainability, the Dangote cement industry, Obajana in Kogi State,  has embarked on the use of tyre, palm nut shells and sawdust as alternative fossil fuel to avoid greenhouse build-up in the atmosphere that strengthens weather changes.

This was disclosed at the 2-day Environmental Journalism workshop organised for journalists by the company in partnership with Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre, CAMIC, with the theme: “Reporting the environment for sustainability”.

The management of the cement company said it has to diversify from coal  which generates  greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and  affect  people, plant and planet.

According to the general Manager, Human Resource of the company, Mr Adinoyi Haruna, the workshop was organised to enlighten and strengthen the participants on environmental sustainability and the need to give prominence to environmental issues in their reportage.

The  Sustainability Manager of  Dangote Group, Dr Egazuema Okoreba, said the  company has fully engrained sustainability into all aspects of its operation by adopting seven out of the fourteen sustainable development goals for environmental sustainability.

He urged journalists to report beyond the finances, profit and loss accomplishments and activities of the Dangote Group.

In their contributions, the facilitators, Dr Alim Abubakre, Mr Aliu Akoshile and Taiwo Adebayo, emphasised that the activities of humans, via the impact of industrialisation and deforestation, in particular, had led to climate change that is ravaging different parts of the world, endangering planet earth currently.

They urged journalists to integrate reporting of the environment as a point of duty by conducting investigations constantly in environmental issues to alert the interest groups for appropriate action.
