Holcim has launched the cement sector’s first industrial-scale test platform for CO₂ capture technologies in France. The new facility, CaptureLab, located in Martres-Tolosane, is designed to test and validate advanced solutions for reducing CO₂ emissions both for the company itself and for third-party partners.
The 2,500 m² platform was developed by Holcim’s R&D teams in France and Switzerland. CaptureLab can analyze and process real-world emissions from cement production, including nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and trace impurities. Thanks to its plug-and-play architecture, different CO₂ capture systems can be connected to the facility and integrated with Holcim’s production site in Martres-Tolosane.
The company expects to use the platform as part of an open innovation model, giving equipment manufacturers, startups and research organizations access to testing. According to Holcim’s Head of Group Operational Excellence, validated technologies are planned to be deployed at the company’s sites to support its decarbonization roadmap and the production of near-zero cement.
The platform will make it possible to test both existing and next-generation carbon capture technologies, including cryogenic treatment, chemical absorption, physical adsorption, membrane separation and biological processes.
