LafargeHolсim and Russian Ecological Operator signed a cooperation agreement

On June 3, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, General Director of LafargeHolсim in Russia Maxim Goncharov and General Director of the public law company Russian Ecological Operator Denis Butsaev signed a cooperation agreement.

The agreement provides for joint work in the field of creating a sustainable system for the management of municipal solid waste within the framework of the federal project "Integrated system for the management of municipal solid waste" and the national project "Ecology". According to the document, LafargeHolсim will modernize the Shchurovsky cement plant in Kolomna to use sorted MSW residues as secondary energy resources. The Russian Ecological Operator will assist in stabilizing the flow of alternative fuels from solid municipal waste to the plant as part of the territorial waste management scheme in Moscow Region.

“After extracting all useful components from MSW for recycling, the waste will be used as fuel at the Shchurovsky cement plant. Within the framework of the project, it is planned to create production facilities for the utilization of up to 80 thousand tons of fuel from MSW per year at the first stage and up to 250 thousand tons at the next stage,” stated the head of REO Denis Butsaev.

“Energy utilization in cement production is recognized as the best available technology in Russia and the European Union, and is widely used in many countries of the world. LafargeHolcim’s Shchurovsky plant is a high-tech enterprise with a dry method of cement production, high-temperature kilns and, most importantly, modern filters. The use of alternative fuels will help to solve the problem of waste in the Moscow region and achieve the goals of the national project “Ecology”,” stressed Maxim Goncharov, General Director of LafargeHolcim.

As part of the signed agreement, LafargeHolcim and the Russian Ecological Operator will also formulate regulatory options for energy utilization at cement plants.

LafargeHolcim is a world leader in the production of building materials and the provision of complete construction solutions. The company's business is represented in four segments: the production of cement, ready-mixed concrete, the extraction of nonmetallic materials and the creation of products and solutions for the construction industry.

LafargeHolcim in Russia is developing the country's cement business, the direction of nonmetallic materials and dry mixtures. The company currently operates four cement plants, as well as three quarries for the extraction of nonmetallic materials. LafargeHolcim products are used in the production of ready-mixed concrete, reinforced concrete products, lightweight concrete products, and in infrastructure construction.

The Russian Ecological Operator (REO) was established in April 2019 with the aim of introducing new waste management schemes, which are part of the waste reform currently underway in Russia. The company is responsible for the operation of all regional waste operators.
