The Government of Uzbekistan Obliged Cement Plants to Control Harmful Emissions

The Government of Uzbekistan obliged all its operating cement factories to install harmful emission analyzers. Sensors will automatically transmit data to the laboratories of the Uzbekistani State committee of ecology and environmental protection. Factories must comply until 2022, otherwise the government may even suspend their operations.

The Cabinet of Ministers published the resolution on Tuesday, November 26.

“All cement enterprises operating in the republic must establish automatic stations capable to sample and analyse sources of atmospheric air pollution, as well as stationary observation points (posts) in the adjacent territory at the expense of economic entities. Enterprises are to do so by January 1, 2022,” — the document states.

The State Committee of Ecology and Environmental Protection is empowered to monitor the implementation of the regulation, and should begin listing all pollution sources to be monitored at enterprises in January 2020.

By 2022, the committee must seek 79 billion som (8.2 million US dollars) to equip its laboratories with equipment that allows them to receive, store and process data transmitted by cement plants. It is also emphasized that cement plants install equipment at their own expense.

Meanwhile, demand for cement in Uzbekistan continues its growth. According to the calculations of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic the demand is expected to hit the mark of 14 million tons in 2020. By 2025, new plants will be able to provide the country with 20.2 million tpa. Only 9 million tons were produced in 2018.

Another cement plant launched in Uzbekistan this year. This plant is located in the Dzharkurgan district of the Surkhandarya region, and has a design capacity of 1.1 million tpa.The plant cost 144 million dollars.
