Armenia Resumes Cement Production and Construction Works

The Armenian government decided to expand the list of economic activities permitted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting April 14th, the list includes production of cement, lime, gypsum, concrete along with construction works (excl. its final stages). Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan, vested with the authority of the head of the Commandant's Office coordinating the activities during the pandemic made the decision to expand the aforementioned list.

The quarantine measures are in effect since March 16 for a period of 30 days. On April 13, the Armenian government decided to extend the quarantine until May 15. Armenia is one of the first countries in the post-Soviet territory to enforce quarantine. Armenia closed borders with neighbouring Iran on February 23rd. However, import of certain Iranian goods (including cement clinker) is still allowed.

Along with several small grinding plants, the cement industry in Armenia is represented by two full-cycle plants — Araratcement and Hrazdan Cement. In 2019, Armenian enterprises produced 590,000 tons of cement.
