Cement Imports in Georgia Increased by 5.7 % in 11M 2020

In January-November 2020, Georgia imported 678,100 tons of cement, which is 5.7 % more than in January-November 2019. The cost of imports decreased by 1.5 % and amounted to US$ 34.7 million. The volume of imports in November decreased by 11.1 % compared to November last year and amounted to 63,400 tons. The cost of imports in November decreased by 19.5 % compared to last November and amounted to $ 3 million.

The main exporters of cement to Georgia are Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran.

The volume of cement imports from Azerbaijan in January-November 2020 decreased by 19.2 % and amounted to 337,300 tons. The cost of imports decreased by 26.7 %, down to US$ 16.4 million.

The volume of cement imports from Turkey for the same period in 2020 increased 2.2 times, amounting to 313,300 tons. The imports cost doubled to US$ 16.8 million.

The volume of cement imports from Iran decreased by 24.8 % and amounted to 27,300 tons. The cost of imports decreased by 28.2 %, down to US$ 1.4 million.

In April this year, imports of Turkish cement to Georgia dropped significantly amid the COVID-19 epidemic. The gradual lifting of quarantine restrictions by the authorities began on April 27. On May 5, it was announced that the construction sector was allowed to resume work, subject to the necessary epidemiological measures. And by the time January-May results came in, the import of Turkish cement to Georgia increased three timescompared to the previous year.
