The Danish Energy Agency, Energistyrelsen, has signed a contract with Aalborg Portland A/S for the capture, transport and storage of 1.25 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. The agreement follows Denmark’s largest tender in the field of CCS — carbon capture and storage.
Earlier, Aalborg Portland submitted an official application to participate in the state programme for the development of CCS, overseen by the Danish Energy Agency. The project, named ACCSION, envisaged the capture of around 1.4 million tonnes of CO₂ per year at the company’s cement plant in Aalborg by 2030.
Under the terms of the contract, Aalborg Portland A/S must begin capturing and storing CO₂ no later than 2030. The company will receive government support of DKK 874.75, in 2026 prices, for each tonne of stored CO₂ over a 15-year period. The total amount of support may reach up to DKK 16.4 billion.
The deputy director of Energistyrelsen said that the completion of the tender will enable the launch of another CCS project alongside other projects currently under development in Denmark. According to him, the project is expected to deliver significant emissions reductions and strengthen the country’s carbon capture, transport and storage value chain.
