Dyckerhoff presents BLUE STAR, the CO2-reduced white cement

On the occasion of the Ulm Concrete Days (June 20th to 22nd, 2023), Dyckerhoff presented the newly developed CO2-reduced cement Dyckerhoff Weiss BLUE STAR. This pozzolan cement was approved by the VDZ in mid-June with the standard designation CEM IV/A (P) 42.5 R and has since been included in the delivery program of the Amöneburg plant. Compared to CEM I cements, around 15% less CO2 is released during the production of Dyckerhoff Weiss BLUE STAR.

The Dyckerhoff experts have been working on alternative input materials for white cement production for some time in order to reduce the CO2 footprint. In addition to limestone powder, natural pozzolan in particular proved to be suitable input materials to replace clinker. These are composed of silica, alumina, limestone and alkalis. The interaction of the silicic acid with calcium hydroxide (cement) and water leads to a pozzolanic reaction.

For more than 90 years, Dyckerhoff WEISS has been giving new impetus to building and designing with concrete. By differentiating the types ("strong types from Dyckerhoff WEISS"), it was already possible in the past to offer cement solutions for the optimal operation of various applications. For example, types of cement with a higher fineness and thus higher performance (52.5) ​​were provided, which optimize the cement content in the customer recipes through the use of different fillers.

Solutions are now being developed that will also transfer white cement to a CO2-efficient future. Value is still placed on the well-known brilliant whiteness, the brightness levels remain identical.
