The Ebonyi State Government has commenced the implementation of plans to establish a new cement factory in Nkalagu (Nigeria) as part of its strategy for industrialisation, job creation, and economic development.
This was disclosed by the governor during an inspection tour of the former Nigerian Cement Company (NIGERCEM) site in Nkalagu, accompanied by a delegation of Chinese contractors, manufacturers, designers, and builders.
According to the governor, the decision to build a new plant is linked to the difficulties in reviving the old cement factory. Preliminary geological assessments have confirmed significant limestone deposits, including 50 million tonnes in Nkalagu and 23 million tonnes in Effium, which, according to him, could sustain the plant for at least 30 years.
He noted that the implementation of the project is expected to reduce the cost of building materials and create employment opportunities in the state and the wider Southeast region.
