Ambuja Cements, the cement and building materials company of the Adani Group, has signed an agreement to develop one of the world’s largest commercial-scale projects for low-carbon cement production. The project is planned to be implemented in Sanghipuram, Gujarat.
The commercial demonstration project will be implemented at the Sanghi plant, which has a cement production capacity of 6.6 million tonnes per annum. As part of the project, the company will evaluate the integration of carbon capture and hybrid electrification technology. The solution is designed to reduce emissions, lower fuel consumption and increase the use of renewable electricity in cement manufacturing.
According to the company, the technology could create a pathway for reducing coal consumption to zero while enabling the flexible use of alternate fuels. The project also provides for the capture of unavoidable process CO₂ emissions.
Subject to successful demonstration, the project could be scaled up by 7x to 8x. This would enable the capture of more than 1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually and help establish a scalable model for low-carbon cement production in India and beyond.
The initiative is part of Ambuja Cements’ decarbonisation strategy and supports the company’s Science Based Targets initiative-validated net zero target for 2050. The company is also advancing the electrification of cement manufacturing and is backed by nearly 1 GW of captive green power.
