Ecocem and Tata Steel expand cooperation on low-carbon cement

Ecocem and Tata Steel IJmuiden in the Netherlands have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance the use of BOF and EAF steel slags as next-generation materials for low-carbon cement. The slags will be used as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs).

The partners aim to reduce CO₂ emissions in the cement industry by lowering clinker use, while also strengthening circular economy practices across the steel and cement value chains. The cooperation is also expected to expand access to low-carbon concrete solutions across the European market.

The memorandum builds on an existing joint research program between Ecocem and Tata Steel IJmuiden. The companies plan to explore new technical, commercial, and regulatory pathways for the valorisation of these steelmaking slags produced at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden plant.
