The Danish Energy Agency has confirmed the award of a contract to Aalborg Portland for the implementation of a carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCS) project targeting a reduction of 1.25 million tonnes of CO₂ per year from 2030 onward.
The decision was made within the framework of Denmark’s major national decarbonisation support scheme, valued at DKK 28.7 billion. A total of 16 companies initially expressed interest, with 10 pre-qualified to participate in the tender process.
A key pillar of Aalborg Portland’s decarbonisation strategy is the ACCSION CCS project, which has also secured 220 million USD in funding from the EU Innovation Fund. The project is being developed in partnership with industrial gas company Air Liquide and aims to capture up to 1.4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually directly at the Aalborg cement production plant.
Once fully operational, ACCSION CCS could deliver up to 46 % of the cement industry’s total emission reduction target in Denmark by 2030, making it one of the most significant contributors to the country’s industrial climate strategy.
