Heidelberg Materials is nearing completion of the first phase of its Airvault cement plant upgrade in France, a project aimed at making the facility one of the lowest-CO₂-emitting plants in Europe by 2030.
As part of the modernization, a new kiln with a clinker production capacity of 4,000 tonnes per day is being installed to replace two outdated semi-wet kilns.
According to the company, the new kiln system is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 27 % while increasing the share of alternative fuels to nearly 90 %, aligning with broader industry decarbonization goals.
The next phase of the project will involve the installation of a carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) system, with a planned annual capture capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes of CO₂.
The AirvaultGOCO₂ is part of the broader GOCO₂ initiative to decarbonise the West of France.
