Portugal’s Secil reduces CO₂ footprint of Maceira plant

Portuguese cement producer Secil is implementing a modernization project at its Maceira-Liz plant aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its production. The initiative is carried out under the ProFuture CCL (Clean Cement Line) program and targets a reduction of CO₂ emissions by approximately 30 % compared to 2019 levels.

The upgrade focuses on kiln No. 6, which has a production capacity of 1,800 tonnes of clinker per day. The project includes a shift toward lower-emission technologies, the elimination of fossil fuel use, as well as the installation of a combustion intensification system and a hybrid waste heat recovery system.

In 2024, the project received approximately 25.6 million EUR in funding from the European Union, with total project costs amounting to 62.9 million EUR.
