Holcim Azerbaijan Offers a Solution to the Problem of Solid Waste Management

On Wednesday, November 13, at the 10th Azerbaijan International Environmental Exhibition in Baku, the subsidiary of the French-Swiss holding LafargeHolcim — Holcim Azerbaijan — has introduced Geocycle. It is a technology that can help solve the problem of municipal solid waste.

As the exhibition covers environmental protection, resource conservation, and waste management issues, Holcim demonstrates innovative solutions, capabilities, and methods related to the disposal of used tires and oil sludge. The technology is already implemented at 180 cement plants of the LafargeHolcim group in 50 countries.

Drawing on the international experience of the holding, Holcim Azerbaijan offers a solution, the company says, can reduce the time of waste disposal, increase the share of their reuse and take care of the environment. Holcim Azerbaijan made it clear that this innovative, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly technology is possible to implement at the cement plant in Garadag, given additional investments and state support.

In October-December last year Holcim Azerbaijan conducted first operational tests with oil sludge and tires. An independent laboratory concluded that the emissions from the joint disposal of used tires and oil sludge were below the accepted norm, which is indicative of the environmental efficiency of the project.

LafargeHolcim also works with alternative fuels and processes waste in cement plants kilns in Russia. Its Russian Ferzikovsky plant near Kaluga recycles municipal waste for several years already.
