Holcim inaugurated Europe’s largest floating solar power plant at its Obourg cement plant in Belgium, with a capacity of 31 MW.
The solar power plant has been installed on a floating array on a lake formed from a rehabilitated chalk quarry. It is expected to produce around 30 GWh annually, which will be fully used as captive power for the cement plant.
Worldwide, the installation of floating solar power plants on the surface of lakes and quarries has been increasing. Such solutions allow for efficient use of available space, while the water provides a cooling effect for the solar panels, and the arrays can help improve water quality.
