Holcim invests on decarbonization, circularity of La Union plant

Leading building solutions provider Holcim Philippines is further accelerating the decarbonization and circularity of operations with a project that will raise the usage of alternative fuels and raw materials of its La Union plant.

Holcim Philippines is investing Php 370 million to build storage and feeding facilities to raise to 40% the cement plant’s usage of low-carbon alternative fuels and raw materials. The new facilities will also strengthen Holcim’s positive contribution to northern Luzon with the Bacnotan plant’s consumption of qualified materials from municipalities and the agricultural sector supporting waste management and providing additional income to local farmers.

The facilities are set to be completed by the second half of 2025. Sinoma CBMI PH Construction Corp. will build the facilities. It is the Philippine unit of China-based Sinoma CBMI, which has undertaken cement plant projects all over the world.

Holcim Philippines is a pioneer of co-processing, a government-approved and globally recognized waste management technology that repurposes qualified discarded materials into alternative low-carbon fuels and raw materials for cement production.

In 2023, the company co-processed over a million tons of waste as alternative fuels and raw materials. Among the beneficiaries of Holcim Philippines’s co-processing operations are 71 city and municipal governments committed to sustainable waste management.

Since 2018, Holcim Philippines has reduced its carbon footprint by more than 20 % by producing more blended cements, replacing coal with qualified wastes as alternative fuels and raw materials, shifting to renewable energy and improving efficiency of operations.
