Kazakhstan may introduce its own carbon tax

Kazakhstan will consider the possibility of introducing a carbon tax in the country. This was reported by the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.

According to the ministry, a working group is being created in the republic to assess the impact of the EU border carbon tax on the real sector of the economy of Kazakhstan. The group will also assess the issues of introducing an export carbon tax, creating a carbon fund and tightening the emissions trading system.

According to the calculations of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Kazakhstan, with the introduction of a carbon tax in accordance with the package of climate legislation of the European Union at a price per ton of carbon dioxide emissions of $ 44, could lose $ 207 million in export income per year, and at a price of US $ 88 - $ 352 million.
