The first carbon test site was opened in Tyumen

The Tyumen Carboniferous Test Site will become part of a vast ecological and climatic research platform that will stretch across the country from north to south. Stations in Tobolsk, Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs may later be added to it. Currently, carbon farms are being completed in Chechnya, Krasnodar Territory, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk Regions and Sakhalin.

The tasks of a carbon farm are to accurately calculate the volumes of CO2 emissions and removals, as well as to develop technologies for capturing, transporting and processing carbon dioxide. A project to create a network of carbon polygons is being implemented on behalf of President Vladimir Putin in Russia. Also in early July, the President included climate change adaptation in an updated national security strategy.

The test site is located fifty kilometers from Tyumen near Lake Kuchak and occupies a little more than two hectares. This will allow monitoring greenhouse gas emissions on an area five thousand times larger according to calculations. It will be necessary to create another network of carbon stations in order to observe the vast territory to the east of Urals. The initial station is planned to be put into operation next year in Tobolsk-base for the company "SIBUR", a partner of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for launching a pilot test site in the region.

A large-scale scientifically grounded monitoring system for climatically active gases is being built. Reliable information on the carbon footprint will not only allow solving environmental problems within the country, but will also strengthen Russia's position in negotiations with the European Union on cross-border taxes.
