USA: cement supplies for the first half of 2021

The USGS's report provides monthly data on the shipments of cement to final customers and the production of clinker in the United States from January 2020 through June 2021. Data on the imports of cement and clinker for June 2021 also are provided. Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in June 2021 were an estimated 10.1 million metric tons (Mt), essentially unchanged from shipments in June 2020.

Shipments for the year through June totaled an estimated 50.4 Mt, a 5.1 % increase from those for the same period in 2020. The leading producing States for portland and blended cement in June 2021 were, in descending order, Missouri, California, Texas, Florida, and Michigan; these States accounted for 40% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming States (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Illinois) received 37 % of June shipments. Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 218,000 metric tons in June 2021, a 2.2 % decrease from those in June 2020. Shipments for the year through June totaled an estimated 1.2 Mt, a slight increase from those for the same period in 2020.

The leading masonry-cement-consuming States in June 2021 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California, and Tennessee; these States received 55 % of June shipments. Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.2 Mt in June 2021, an 4.8 % increase from production in June 2020. Production for the year through June totaled an estimated 36.9 Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2020.

The leading clinkerproducing States in June 2021 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida, and Alabama. Monthly imports can show significant year-over-year changes for a variety of reasons and commonly do not correlate well with consumption levels in the respective import districts in the same month. June 2021 imports of cement and clinker totaled 2.3 Mt, a 36 % increase from imports in June 2020. Imports for the year through June totaled 10.9 Mt, an increase of 39 % from those for the same period in 2020.

–  Canada – 2.4 Mt or $ 246,028,354;
–  Turkey – 3.4 Mt or $ 199,528,598;
–  Mexico –  0.85 Mt or $ 80,480,585;
–  Greece –  1.2 Mt or $ 66,410,893;
–  Vietnam –  0.75 Mt or $ 57,884,178.

Volumes of white cement supplies for January–June 2021 by country (values ​​are given for the five countries with the highest value indicators):
– Canada –  143,053 tons or $ 19,390,529;
–  Egypt – 114,059 tons or $ 14,242,686;
–  Turkey – 366,985 tons or $ 30,631,074;
–  Mexico –  97,175 tons or $ 15,542,628;
–  Denmark –  84,388 tons or $ 11,141,478.
