Cement Imports in Georgia up by 7.8 % YoY in January-October 2020

In January-October 2020, Georgia imported 614,700 tons of cement, which is 7.8 % more than in January-October 2019. The cost of imports increased by 0.7 % and amounted to US$ 31.7 million. The volume of imports in October decreased by 6.4 % compared to October last year and amounted to 67,800 tons. The cost of imports in October fell by 11.8 % compared to last October and amounted to US$ 3.4 million.

The main exporters of cement to Georgia are Azerbaijan and Turkey.

The volume of cement imports from Turkey in 10M 2020 increased 2.3 times, amounting to 291,300 tons. The cost of imports increased 2.1 times, up to US$ 15.7 million.

The volume of cement imports from Azerbaijan in 10M 2020 decreased by 20.1 % and amounted to 250,300 tons. Import costs fell by 27.3 %, down to US$ 14.5 million.

In April this year, imports of Turkish cement to Georgia dropped significantly amid the COVID-19 epidemic. The gradual lifting of quarantine restrictions by the authorities began on April 27. On May 5, it was announced that the construction sector was allowed to resume work, subject to the necessary epidemiological measures. And by the time January-May results came in, the import of Turkish cement to Georgia increased three times compared to the previous year.
