CEMEX sets more ambitious reduction target

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (CEMEX), announced that it is setting a new, more ambitious target - to reduce CO2 emissions to below 475 kg per ton of cement by 2030, which is by about 40% (all figures are compared to 1990 levels). This value is consistent with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) target. CEMEX's previous 2030 target of 520 kg CO2 per ton of cement is now slated to be reached by 2025. In addition, CEMEX is committed to reducing CO2 emissions from its concrete business by 35% by 2030, to 165 kg CO2 per m3.

The company expects to invest approximately US $ 60 million annually to meet its new 2030 targets. These ambitious new targets are the backbone of CEMEX's Operational Sustainability strategy and the Future in Action program to reduce carbon emissions. CEMEX builds on the existing work protocols, materials and proven technologies that it has successfully implemented in Europe over the past two decades in its roadmap to achieve the goals for 2025 and 2030. The funds that CEMEX plans to use to achieve its new goals include:

• use of alternative fuels with high biomass content,

• supply of hydrogen for combustion as fuel,

• production of clinkers with a lower production temperature and with a reduced carbon footprint,

• use of decarbonized raw materials,

• optimization of heat consumption in furnaces,

• decrease in the share of clinker in cement due to the increased use of blended cements in the market.

CEMEX is one of the world's largest cement producers. The head office of the holding is located in Mexico.
