In 2020, Georgia imported 326,900 tons of Turkish cement worth US$ 17.5 million. The volume of imports in physical terms doubled, and increased 1.9 times in monetary terms. Azerbaijan and Iran are also among the top three import partners of Georgia in 2020.
The total volume of imported cement in Georgia in 2020 increased by 5.9 % YoY, up to 735,900 tons.
Over the past year, Azerbaijan has reduced the volume of cement exports to Georgia by 14.3 % YoY, down to 381,500 tons. The export value fell by 22.4 % YoY, down to US$ 18.5 million. Iran has reduced the volume of exports over the same period by 40 %, down to 27,300 tons. The export value fell by 42.1 %, down to US$ 1.4 million.
From March 21 to May 22, a COVID-19 related lockdown was enforced in Georgia, and all construction projects were stopped. The gradual lifting of quarantine restrictions by the authorities began on April 27. In early May, construction companies were allowed to resume operations under the condition of strictly following the necessary health safety protocols.
