Kaluga Region of Russia will build first 28 km of concrete roads by 2024

Kaluga authorities intend to test new technologies for the construction of roads by building 28 km of concrete roads in the region in the course of next 3-4 years. The corresponding project is already being prepared, stated on Wednesday Mikhail Golubev, the Minister for Road Facilities of the region at the 17th Interregional Conference "New advanced technologies for the repair and maintenance of highways" held in Omsk.

Golubev: “While speaking about the use of cement in the road sector, it is worth noting that we are in need of building cement-concrete roads. We are engaged in the design of highways with cement productions plants, and in the period of next three to four years, we plan to build first 28 km of such roads in the region”.

According to the Minister, the design of new type of roads in the region is carried out at the expense of cement manufacturers, who initiated the implementation of this project in the region. “This is a very big support for our road fund,” mentioned Golubev.

According to the Association of Concrete Roads of Russia, cement-concrete roads are very strong and durable and cost the budget 30% less than asphalt ones. The service life before the first overhaul of the concrete road reaches 25 years, asphalt - 13 years. In the US, 60% of federal highways are built on the basis of this technology. As for Russia, out of 1.5 million km of all public roads, concrete roads cover less than 1%. Among them, for example, is the federal highway R-254 "Irtysh", where 30 km of the highway were reconstructed and built in a cement-concrete pavement.
