Portland Cement Production Growth in Kazakhstan Stalls in 2019

The production of Portland cement in Kazakhstan in 2019 was at the level of 2018 almost to a single ton: 9.923 million tons against 9.913 million tons last year. Moreover, the only factor that helped avoid negative growth values was a record-breaking production volume of December. That month saw cement enterprises in Kazakhstan produce 570,000 tons of Portland cement, which is 24% more than in December 2018.

The latest statistics are published by the Statistics committee of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The production volume was steadily growing up until 2018: 9.03 million tons in 2016, 9.43 million tons in 2017 and 9.91 million tons in 2018.

At the same time, the December wholesale price per ton of Portland cement in 2019 was 17724 tenge (46.8 US dollars)— a 6% increase compared to the previous year.

The cement industry of the republic is represented by 17 full-cycle enterprises. HeidelbergCement occupies the leading position with three cement plants. The latest commissioned enterprise was a plant in the Shieli district of Kyzylorda region. The design capacity of the plant is 1 million tons of Portland cement per year. China Gezhouba Group Cement acted as an investor.

In the spring of 2020, a plant in the Kerbulak district of the Almaty region is expected for launch. The production capacity of the enterprise will be 1.2 million tpa. The investor will be the Kazakh-Singaporean company Alacem.
