Turkish Cement Accounted for 86 % of Ukrainian Cement Import in 4M2020

Cement imports from Turkey reached as much as 86 % of all cement imported into Ukraine in the first four months of 2020. Turkish cement completely replaced Russian, Belarusian and Moldavian products from the Ukrainian market. All due to a direct ban on cement imports from Russia and import tariffs on products from Belarus and Moldova.

Ukraine imported a total of 258,600 tons of cement in January-April 2020, which is 9 % less YoY, as per the report of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine. Turkish cement accounted for 86 % of total cement imports with a monetary value of $11.6 million. Lithuania and Germany account for 4.5 % ($607,000) and 3.9 % ($6.2 million) accordingly. Import from Germany is 91 % refractory cement.

Turkey's import share in Ukraine in 2019 was 34 %. Turkish companies exported 292,000 tons of cement worth $15.3 million. Belarus exported 199,500 tons worth $10.5 million, Russia — 177,400 tons worth $8.6 million, and Moldova exported 124,000 tons of cement worth $7.2 million over 2019.

In August last year, Ukraine increased tariffs on cement from Belarus (57 % added) and Moldova (up by 94.5 %), and banned cement import from Russia.

The main export partner of Ukrainian cement producers in 2020 is still Romania. In January-April 2020, 42 % of all Ukrainian cement exports amounting to $3.2 million went to Romania. The total export volume of Ukrainian cement in January-April 2020 amounted to 182,200 tons, indicating a 14 % YoY decrease.
