SaltX Technology, Holcim and Paebbl are implementing a demonstration project for electrified cement production and the utilization of captured CO₂ across the industrial value chain. The project has received funding through the CET Partnership, an EU programme supporting energy and climate technologies.
SaltX Technology is a Swedish company developing electrification and carbon capture technologies for energy-intensive high-temperature industries, including lime and cement. Holcim is a Swiss building materials producer. Paebbl is a company headquartered in Sweden that is developing CO₂ mineralization technology to produce carbon-negative construction materials.
The work will be carried out at SaltX’s industrial test and research facility, ECRC, in Hofors, Sweden. The project aims to combine electrified cement clinker production with the permanent utilization of captured CO₂ in a single industrial process. According to the participants, this approach can help reduce process emissions and enable new circular material flows in the cement and construction industries.
The project is coordinated by the Swedish research institute RISE, which will contribute expertise in project management, material analysis and mineralization. The consortium also includes NCCBM, India; CSIR-CBRI, India; and Université Gustave Eiffel, France. They will participate in materials research and testing, the study of carbonation of recycled concrete, and techno-economic analysis.
The total project budget is approximately SEK 45 million. SaltX’s activities within the project are valued at approximately SEK 19 million, of which around SEK 13 million will be provided through the CET Partnership programme.
The project is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026 and will run for approximately three years, with SaltX’s main deliveries expected during the first two years.
