Soyuzcement Expects 3.5 % YoY Cement Consumption Decrease in Russian Federation in 2020

Soyuzcement expects a decrease in cement consumption volume of 3.5 % in Russia by the end of 2020, down to 56 million tons. It is also expected the volume of housing commissioning to go down by 10.2 % YoY by the end of the year, down to 71 million m2, as per the latest survey of Soyuzcement.

In 9M 2020, cement imports in the Russian Federation increased by 9 % compared to the same period of the previous year, up to 102,100 tons, and exports — by 6.2 % YoY, up to 56,800 tons.

At the end of January-September 2020, cement production in Russia decreased by 4.5 % to down 43.2 million tons. In October 2020, consumption is expected to be at 5.5 million tons, which is 1 % more than in October last year.

As per the latest report of the Federal State Statistics Service cement production in Russia in 10M 2020 amounted to 48.6 million tons (down by 3.9 % YoY). RMC production in January-October amounted to 30.3 million m3 (down by 2.3 % YoY).

In the medium and long term, positive factors for the industry will be the anti-crisis measures of the Government of Russia and regional authorities, support measure packages for the economy, essential enterprises and civilians, as well as renovation of the housing stock, implementation of integrated development projects, an increase in the share of construction of cement-concrete roads, implementation of the “Housing and the urban environment ” national project, the implementation of the President’s social initiatives. 

Thus in the first nine months of 2020, the volume of housing mortgage lending increased by 37.6 % compared to January-September last year, up to RUB 2.7 trillion. The same indicator in September increased by 28.4 % MoM and 2.1 times YoY, to RUB 503.5 billion.
