Testing of geopolymer concrete begins in Sydney

Sydney City Council, Australia, partnered with the University of New South Wales in 2019 to replace part of the city's roadway with green concrete. This change was made to test the viability of the new material in road construction.

Tests of the resistance of geopolymer concrete began on the street leading to Sydney Airport in 2021. Nine sensors are installed to monitor concrete performance and compare results. University researchers plan to monitor traffic and pavement load for five years. Subsequently, the test results will be used by the University of New South Wales and the Cooperative Low Carbon Industry Research Center to develop a compilation of industry guidelines for the use of geopolymer concrete.

Researchers believe that the biggest benefit of geopolymer concrete is its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout its entire life cycle. In addition, it’s production cost is lower than that of conventional concrete.
