Turkmenistan Builds New Capital City and Will Boost Cement Capacity

During the following three years, Turkmenistan intends increasing capacities of two cement enterprises and building a new one. Bäherden and Lebap cement plants — subsidiaries of Turkmencement — will undergo moderniztion, increasing their capcities up to 2 million tpa each (current capacity is 1 million each). The new cement plant is expected to operate in Köýtendag with a design capacity of 1 million tpa.

The decree on the construction and modernization of industrial enterprises was signed by President of the Republic Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Thursday, February 20. The document requires the Ministry of Industry and Construction to ensure the construction of facilities in 2020-2023. According to the decree, the aforementioned ministry was instructed to hold international tenders for the selection of contractors. The Ministry of Industry and Construction Production of Turkmenistan was established in early February this year and is the legal successor of the abolished Ministry of Industry and Communication and its agency Türkmensenagat (Turkmenprom).

Six months ago, the construction on the new capital of the country — the city of Akhal — launched in Turkmenistan. In early February, the president ordered $1.5 billion to be allocated for building materials and equipment.
