Russian Сement Market Showing Upward Trend

The Russian cement market showed an upward trend in May, as per the Union of Cement Manufacturers of Russia “Soyuzcement”. Cement consumption in 5M 2020 has not reached last year's figures yet and its decline is estimated at 4.4 % YoY and the consumption in May 2020 is estimated at 90-97 % of May 2019 volume.

Cement production in 4M 2020 decreased by 2.1 % YoY on the backdrop of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, down to 13.9 million tons, Soyuzcement reports. In May 2020, cement shipments by road and rail increased by 28 % MoM, to 9 million tons. The YoY figures indicate May at a 10 % decline.

Cement production in 5M 2020 decreased in the Central (by 2 %), Northwest (by 2 %), Ural (by 7 %) and Southern (by 10 %) federal districts. The volumes remained at the level of 2019 in the North Caucasian and Siberian federal districts, and increased in the Volga (by 5 %) and the Far East (by 8 %) federal districts.

As per Soyuzcement, the cement market contraction in 2020 can reach up to 10 % YoY in the negative scenario and up to 3 % YoY in the positive scenario.

Support measures announced by the Russian government currently have a positive impact on the industry.
